Importance of Folic Acid

This is probably a blog post you wouldn’t normally see on my blog but now that I am a mother I feel I need to not just write about fashion & make up but other topics that may potentially help someone down the line.

I will briefly talk about my experience and then below I have some facts from  Safe

I know most people take it either the months before they conceive or when they find out they are pregnant. I however started when I met my husband even though I had no intentions of having kids at that time but you never know what could happen so I always took it as a precaution.
Now I am a mother with a healthy baby girl I’m so happy I took folic.

What is Folic Acid?

Most women have heard of folic acid and think of it as something to take while you are pregnant. The fact is that if you are sexually active and could become pregnant, whether you are planning to or not, you need to take a folic acid supplement every day.

Why take it every day?

The thing is that about half of pregnancies are unplanned. That means, that by the time you realise you are pregnant it may be too late to help support your baby’s spine and brain development by simply taking folic acid. Your baby’s spine develops fully in the first 28 days of pregnancy. That’s why taking folic acid is essential for at least 3 months before and during the first 3 months of pregnancy. You never know when you might become pregnant, so taking folic acid every day, whether you are planning or not, is the only way you can help your baby to develop without a neural tube defect (NTD).

NTD’S can bring about nerve damage or incomplete brain development in severe cases, causing disabilities. Many of these (up to 70%) could be prevented by taking folic acid. I hoped I did the best I could for my baby by taking just a tiny tablet.
Unfortunately, Irish women have a genetic make-up that makes them more prone to having babies with NTDs. So, more than in any other country, we need to protect ourselves. So, next time you are in the pharmacy pick up some folic acid and make folic acid part of your routine. I am.
